Demand for electricity across the country hit 1,600 MW on Sunday. This is the maximum value till date.

According to Nepal Electricity Authority, the consumption on the day was recorded at 32.5 million units, which is 2.5 million more units compared to the normal day consumption. Likewise, the electricity demand also crossed 1,500 MW in the past two years.

After the 456-MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydroelectric Project started full-fledged production last week, the country’s total electricity production stands around 2,000 MW, making the country self-reliant in the electricity supply. However, the consumption is still low due to the problem of infrastructure including the transmission lines.

Nepal has been looking towards increasing domestic consumption of electricity to replace imported fuel for energy supply. In addition to this, the country is also making an effort to start power trade with the neighboring countries to utilise its surplus production.
