About

In the global context, major sources of energy production encompass water, solar, wind, natural gas, coal, petroleum, nuclear, and other forms. Turning our attention to Nepal, water resources stand out as the primary and crucial source for electricity generation. With approximately 6,000 rivers and streams, excluding those flowing into India's Ganges River, Nepal boasts substantial water resources. The annual water discharge from Nepali rivers is estimated at 225 billion cubic meters, excluding contributions to the Ganges, where Nepali rivers contribute 70% of the flow during the dry season and 47% annually.

In the realm of energy production, these water resources play a pivotal role in Nepal. Dr. Hariman Shrestha, through the 'Topo Study' of the Kosi, Gandaki, and Karnali rivers, assessed Nepal's hydroelectric potential at 83,000 MW with an economic and technical capacity of 43,000 MW. While the potential for solar energy production in Nepal has not been extensively studied, experts believe it holds significant promise. Wind energy, with a potential of approximately 3,000 MW, is also considered a viable source. Despite these possibilities, hydroelectric power remains the primary focus for energy development in Nepal. Energy experts suggest that Nepal could achieve a capacity ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 MW in the future. Nevertheless, a 2019 study by the Ministry of Energy, Water & Energy Secretariate (WECS) projected a more conservative estimate of around 72,000 MW for Nepal's hydroelectric potential, both technically and economically viable.

Journalists engaged in the energy and water resources sector have felt the need to channelize facts, figures, authentic information, and awareness through the conduit of this sensitive subject for years. Moreover, they have recognized the importance of collaboration with governmental agencies to facilitate and supplement the development of this sector. In line with this imperative goal, the online magazine Urja Khabar (www.urjakhabar.com) has been in operation since January 1, 2017, providing content in both Nepali and English languages.

This medium stands out as the pioneering and exclusive online news portal of the energy sector in the country. With a commitment to further exploration, study, documentation, and active engagement in the research domain, aims to provide resources to agencies involved in research. Keeping these objectives, the magazine has been publishing semi-annual editions of Urja Khabar in both Nepali and English languages since January 16, 2022.

The two editions (online and print) of Urja Khabar, as mentioned, are operated and published under the Energy Information Center Pvt. Ltd. The company, recognizing the evolving global environment and information technology, has strategically transformed the subjects in the energy sector to be more dynamically accessible. In addition to serving as a reputable source for readers, researchers, private enterprises, and governmental bodies, the company has taken a significant leap forward. It has launched an online energy television channel, URJA TV, with the objective of facilitating widespread access to information.

For the development of the country's energy sector, continuous efforts are being made to streamline information flow along with engaging in studies, research, discussions, debates, and policy-oriented subjects. The objective is to harness the abundant potential of economic prosperity through renewable energy production and ensure that Nepal does not remain impoverished perpetually. This commitment extends to the government, private sector, and concerned entities, with a relentless focus on pressing them forward.

Therefore, in this endeavor, proactive and constructive collaboration is essential. Governmental, political, and administrative leadership, policy makers, energy promoters, investors, experts, researchers, technical professionals, and consumers, all stakeholders are expected to join hands, support, and engage in constructive criticism. This collaborative approach aims to propel the nation forward towards sustainable development in the energy sector.
