Kathmandu; Nepal imported 2,009 units of electric vehicles (EVs) in the first seven months of the current fiscal year, an additional 200 units compared to the number imported in the same period last year.

During mid-July and mid-February of 2021/22, Nepal imported 1,807 units of electric four wheelers. The records with the Department of Customs (DoC), show that the country spent Rs 5.63 billion to purchase EVs from abroad in the review period this year. The government collected customs revenue worth Rs 1.58 billion from the transaction.

Nepal imports electric cars from countries like India, China, USA and Korea. In the review period, the country imported 1,435 EVs of Rs 3.89 billion from India, 321 EVs of Rs 755.91 million from China and 246 EVs of Rs 951.46 million from South Korea.  

Meanwhile, Nepal spent Rs 156.69 billion for the import of petroleum products alone in the first seven months. The expenses on fuels made up 17 percent of the country’s total imports of Rs 919.16 billion. In the past one month alone, the country spent Rs 13.62 billion to import diesel, petrol, cooking gas and aviation turbine fuel.
