Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has urged the public to exercise caution as adverse weather conditions are expected to affect several parts of the country from Thursday.
In a caution notice issued on Tuesday, the NEA warned that moderate to heavy rainfall could damage electrical infrastructure and disrupt power supply. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, remain in safe locations, and use electrical appliances carefully during the expected weather disturbances.
Citing a special weather bulletin issued by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DoHM) on Monday, the authority said a powerful cyclone developing over the sea could bring rainfall, snowfall, floods, landslides, lightning, strong winds, and inundation to Nepal.
The NEA said damage to electricity poles, wires, and transformers could interrupt power services. It has placed staff at relevant offices on high alert to protect infrastructure and carry out immediate repairs in case of disruptions.
Consumers facing power outages or electricity-related problems have been advised to contact their local NEA distribution centres or designated help desks. The authority has also urged the public to follow official sources for weather updates and safety instructions.
According to the DoHM, moderate rainfall is likely in most areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, as well as some parts of Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.
Heavy rain and snowfall are also expected in some high-altitude areas, potentially affecting daily life, transportation, tourism, trekking, and mountaineering activities.
The department has warned that heavy snowfall could make roads and trekking trails difficult to navigate and increase cold conditions in mountain settlements. Tourists, trekkers, mountaineers, and local residents have been advised to check weather forecasts before travelling and take necessary precautions.
