Kathmandu: Nepal imported 6,636 electric vehicles (EVs) worth Rs 15.03 billion in the first three months of the current fiscal year 2026/27, with imports surging ahead of the major festive season.

According to the Department of Customs, 3,802 EVs were imported between mid-September and mid-October alone. In the first two months of the fiscal year, beginning in mid-July, Nepal had imported 2,834 EVs.

The government collected Rs 9.06 billion in customs revenue from EV imports during the review period.

China accounted for the largest share of EV imports, with 4,820 units worth Rs 11.10 billion. India supplied 1,420 EVs worth Rs 2.80 billion, while 393 EVs worth Rs 1.12 billion were imported from Thailand. Two EVs worth Rs 7.8 million were imported from the United States.

With the Tatopani–Khasa border crossing remaining out of operation and the Rasuwagadhi–Kerung border closed since the Bhotekoshi–Trishuli floods on August 26, traders have been using the Korala border point in Mustang to import goods from China.
