KATHMANDU, The Nepal Hydropower Association (NHA), in collaboration with the International Hydropower Association (IHA), is organizing International Hydropower Conference on September 12, targeting to promote consumption of hydropower and green energy to replace use of fossil fuels.

At a time when there is an increasing global concern over mitigating the impacts of climate change, a conclave related to the issue is being organized in Nepal. The two day conference will observe a wide range of stakeholders from South Asia, Europe and the US that will include entrepreneurs, investors and experts related to the sector.

According to Arun Rajauria, general secretary of the NHA, the participation of former Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Bligh Turnbull will be the major attraction of the conference. “There is no other alternative than green energy, for which hydropower is the first and the final source. As Nepal has immense potential for hydropower, we are organizing the conference to draw the attention of global investors,” Rajauria told Urja Khabar.

Highlighting the declining water flow in the rivers and streams due to climate change, Rajauria said Nepal needs to cater its potential to the fullest as soon as possible.

The conference will be conducting five sessions that will include the inauguration and final sessions. Minister for the Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Pampha Bhusal, Australia’s former Prime Minister Turnbull and Chief Executive Officer of the IHA Eddie Rich are scheduled to address the inauguration session.

In addition, two parallel sessions on policies related to hydropower and open regional hydropower trade will be organized on the first day. The representatives from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Pakistan and Afghanistan will be participating in the session of ‘Regional Hydropower Trade.’ Secretary of the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat Dinesh Kumar Ghimire and IHA President Roger Gill will be addressing the session.

Similarly, the second-day sessions will discuss the issues of standard of hydropower and the private sector investment. The European Investment Bank will be coordinating the first session while Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Sushil Chandra Tiwari, Chairman of Hydropower Sustainability Council Ashok Khosla and Chief Executive Officer of Investment Board Nepal Sushil Bhatta, have been scheduled for their value presentations.

In the second session ‘Private Sector’s Investment,’ CEO of Hydroelectricity Investment and Development Company Limited (HIDCL) Arjun Kumar Gautam will be giving his special presentation, according to Rajauria.
