Kathmandu: The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has extended the national grid to start main electricity supply to Hatiya in Bhotkhola Rural Municipality-3, located in the northern part of Sankhuwasabha district.

This extension was carried out through a project managed by the Planning and Technical Services Department under the NEA's Distribution and Consumer Services Directorate. The connection to the national grid is expected to make the electricity supply in this remote and inaccessible area more reliable and adequate.

Local residents, government offices, health institutions, grain mills, and cottage industries will be among the direct beneficiaries from this development. According to Rambabu Chaudhary, Chief of the NEA’s Khandbari Distribution Center, three-phase meters have been installed at the Bhotkhola Rural Municipality office and the hospital in Hatiya to initiate the supply.

Previously, the area relied on electricity from a micro-hydropower project. Chaudhary noted that the extension of the national grid would help enhance the availability, regularity, and reliability of the power supply in the locality.

Meanwhile, the NEA has also initiated the necessary processes to extend the national grid to Kimathanka in Bhotkhola Rural Municipality, which borders China. The bidding process to bring electricity to that area is already underway, with a target to supply power via the national grid to Kimathanka within the current fiscal year.

Prioritizing the expansion of electricity access in Sankhuwasabha, the NEA is continuing its efforts to extend the national grid to remote and inaccessible settlements. Approximately 95 percent of the district's households currently receive electricity from the national grid, while the remaining households are made available with electricity through micro-hydropower and solar energy plants.
