Kathmandu: The Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), in a bid to relieve students residing temporarily in the Kathmandu Valley from supply disruption of cooking gas, is providing electric stoves to 300 students free of costs.
Issuing a public notice on September 19, the AEPC called on mainly the students from the minority indigenous and Dalit communities who are studying at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels by staying in rented accommodation in the Kathmandu Valley.
According to the AEPC, it has taken this initiative with the aim of providing relief to students who suffer due to the problem in the supply of liquefied petroleum gas and increasing the consumption of electricity produced domestically. The center has stated that it is taking forward as a program to increase the use of electric stoves as an alternative to LP gas.
For the past few months, consumers in the valley have been struggling to fetch a cylinder full of LP gas, mainly with the disruptions caused by the US-Iran war and blockade of Prithvi Highway in the aftermath of Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods. Mostly the students staying in rented rooms, among others have been suffered by the shortage of cooking gas.
Students interested to get an electric stove can apply online by 2 pm Thursday. The students concerned have to submit a Nepali citizenship certificate, a recommendation from the educational institution they are studying, a student identity card, and an identity card proving that they belong to the endangered indigenous or Dalit community or a recommendation from the concerned body.
The AEPC has mentioned that students who do not submit the necessary documents by filling out the online form only will not be included in the selection process. Priority will be given to students with poor economic background, received approval from the related local body and are studying in public or community educational institutions.
