Kathmandu: The Bangladesh government has decided to import 40 megawatts of electricity from Nepal using the power grid of India. A meeting of cabinet committee on economic affairs has gave in-principle approval to purchase 40MW electricity on Wednesday.
According to a decision of the cabinet committee on economic affairs, The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will buy the electricity through the direct purchase method.
Even though it was ready to export to Bangladesh, there was a long time of confusion because India
did not allow it to use the transmission infrastructure.
In order to sell electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh, there should be tripartite agreement between Nepal, India and Bangladesh for power trade. An electricity sale agreement must be signed between Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam, India and Bangladesh Power Development Board.
NTPC is the nodal agency designated by the Government of India for electricity trade with Nepal, Bangladesh and other countries. At present, all electricity import-export transactions between Nepal and India are being done through NTPC.
